AI won’t replace great support professionals, but it will change the role

Posted on 1/07/2026 by Charlotte Frank

Artificial intelligence is reshaping the way businesses operate, and support functions are no exception.

For many Executive Assistants, Office Managers and business support professionals, conversations around AI naturally raise questions about what the future of the role looks like. As AI-powered tools take on more administrative tasks such as diary management, travel booking and meeting scheduling, the role is evolving rather than disappearing.

In fact, when we recently asked our LinkedIn community about the biggest challenge facing Executive Assistants today, 39% said adapting to AI and new technology, making it the number one concern ahead of increasing workload and always-on expectations.

But what's interesting is what our second poll revealed. When asked what executives value most from a great EA, 42% said protecting their time and priorities, with trusted advice, stakeholder management and organisational skills following behind.

Together, these results tell an important story. While AI is changing how support professionals work, the qualities that leaders value most remain deeply human. Technology can automate tasks, but it can't replace sound judgement, discretion, emotional intelligence or the ability to anticipate an executive's needs before they're voiced.

Rather than replacing Executive Assistants, AI is removing some of the repetitive administrative tasks that have traditionally filled their days. That creates more opportunity to focus on strategic priorities, relationship management, project coordination and becoming an even more trusted business partner.

We're already seeing this reflected in the market. Employers are increasingly looking for support professionals who are confident using technology, commercially aware and adaptable, while continuing to provide the trust, judgement and stakeholder management that senior leaders depend on.

AI also presents significant opportunities to improve productivity. From streamlining workflows and prioritising workloads to enhancing communication and onboarding, the right tools can help support professionals spend less time on administration and more time creating value.

The challenge isn't whether AI will change the profession; it already is. The real opportunity lies in learning how to work alongside it. The most successful Executive Assistants won't necessarily be those who know every new AI tool. They'll be the ones who combine technology with the skills that remain impossible to automate: building relationships, navigating complexity, protecting leaders' time and making good decisions when nuance matters.

The role of the Executive Assistant has always evolved alongside business. AI is simply the next stage of that evolution. We'd love to hear your perspective. Or if you're looking to hire or explore your next opportunity within business support, get in touch with Vien Ng atvn@charlottefrank.com.
