Having thrived in the recruitment industry for four years, I think it’s fair to say that I’ve had my share of ups and downs. I learned the importance of work-life balance early on in my career and I truly believe that it is the key to success. If we ignore our need to unwind from work it can easily lead to stress and burnout. Here are my top tips for achieving and maintaining a healthy work-life balance:
- Unplug - Technology has made our lives easier in many ways, but it has also created expectations of constant accessibility. While it’s imperative to complete work tasks, it’s also important to unplug after work and enjoy the moment. Eat dinner away from your phone. Take a walk. Read a book. If you need to check work emails, schedule time to do so rather than constantly looking at your email or phone. It’s important to make time for your life outside of work so you can be happier and more focused at work.
- Exercise - Not only is exercising beneficial for your physical health, but there are also benefits for your mental health. Studies show that exercising helps you remain alert, so find a way to exercise that works for your schedule! This will help you get more things done because of the release of endorphins and this is a key component to boosting your energy, increasing your ability to concentrate, and relieving your stress.
- Meditate – We tend to pay more attention to taking care of our bodies than our minds. In fact, we often take our mind for granted. Try to carve out 15 minutes a day just to sit and breathe, you’ll be amazed at the results and your ability to handle stress after a mini-break. It’s crucial to take time to reflect and de-stress.
Work is an essential part of your life, but it’s only one component. We are so much more than just our work. By making time to care for ourselves, we are allowing ourselves to focus on what’s important and find the perfect balance between work and health to succeed more than ever in the business world.
